Dog park on track to open this summer » Region » Traverse City …

May 11th, 2012

TRAVERSE CITY– Tails will wag at the city’s first public dog park come summer.

The city plans to build an off-leash dog park at the to-be-renamed Veterans Memorial Park, near the corner of Bay and Division streets. The project is on track to hold a grand opening in July, said Gary Howe, city parks and recreation commission chair.

“Our idea (is) to make one that’s walkable to several neighborhoods (and is) about socializing the dogs as well as the people,” he said. “I think there’s an opportunity for more urban dog parks as well.”

Work continues to raise money, finalize user guidelines and choose a new park name.

Supporters raised about $16,000 — enough to pay for fencing and other amenities. Jami Moore, who helped lead the fundraising effort, said the dog park group continues to accept money for additional improvements. Donors hailed from throughout the region, downstate and as far away as California, Arizona and New Jersey, she said.

“We did it in about four months. We were very pleased, given all of the important organizations out there and people being pulled in all directions,” she said.

The city issued a request for bids this week for the park fence, which will enclose a grassy area east of the park’s tennis courts.

The parks commission discussed dog park rules, which will be forwarded to the city commission for approval, Howe said.

“The basic one is, ‘You are responsible. Owners are responsible for their dogs,’” he said.

Rules will be posted at the park and include “common sense” items, Howe said. Owners must clean up after dogs, and all dogs must wear a collar with identification and current registration tags. Dogs can’t be left unattended.

The parks board also continues to discuss what to rename the park. Howe said residents responded with plenty of suggestions, but more than 100 were “dog-park specific” — not the naming intention.

It’s possible the city will pick two names, one for the park in general and a non-legal name for the enclosed dog park area, Howe said. He wants the parks board to send a name recommendation to the city commission by June.

Police: Parks worker stole tennis racquet from pro — Wilmette …

April 29th, 2012

An eBay auction led Wilmette detectives to arrest a park district employee who allegedly stole a racquet from a tennis professional, authorities said.

When the tennis pro realized his racquet had been stolen recently, he found it on eBay — figuring it was his based on his specific string type, said Wilmette Park District Executive Director Steve Wilson.

Armed with that info, police investigators were able to set up a sting to meet with and arrest the seller in a Skokie parking lot on April 20, said Wilmette Police Det. Landon Girard.

“I arranged to meet with him to see the product, purporting to be a buyer, but saying I wanted to see the racquet to make sure it was in good condition,” Girard said.

He had also subpoenaed eBay for information, but the results would have taken weeks and by that time the racquet could have been sold, he added.

Ryan Thomas Nitch, 38, of the 1800 block of West Greenleaf in Round Lake, was charged April 20 with misdemeanor theft, police said. He was terminated from his maintenance position later that day, Wilson said.

Nitch allegedly stole the new Dunlop racquet and string, valued at $200, from the Centennial Park and Recreation Complex, 2300 Old Glenview Road, according to the police report.

Nitch could not be reached for comment.

Wilson said Nitch had worked for the Park District for at least five years. Girard said there’s no indication of previous thefts.

“I believe this to be an isolated incident based on his eBay history and his statements,” Girard said.

Nitch was released on a recognizance bond and given a May 16 court date at C0ok County courthouse in Skokie.
